Maintain Earrings with Screw-on Safety Backings

To prevent the threaded posts on earrings to strip (flatten), which causes the ear nuts to sit loosely and potentially fall off, we recommend the following:

  • Avoid pushing and over-tightening: Gently screw the ear nuts on the earrings until they are locked and tightened secure, without forcing. Tighten them just enough to keep the earrings in place without forcing them.
  • Avoid pulling: Ensure that the ear nut is unscrewed completely when removing the earrings.
  • Be Gentle: Handle your earrings with care, especially when putting them on or taking them off. Avoid any unnecessary twisting or bending of the posts. Please note that removing the earrings too often may cause some stripping over time.
  • Keep them dry: Solid gold does not rust, however, prolonged exposure to moisture can accelerate tarnishing on the alloy metals (evenin 14K gold). Remove earrings before swimming, showering, or exposure to water.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid exposing your earrings to chemicals, such as household cleaning agents, perfumes, or hairspray. Chemicals can tarnish the metal and weaken the threaded posts.
  • Clean regularly: Clean your earrings regularly to remove dirt, oils, and debris that can accumulate on the threads. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the earrings.
  • Store Earrings Properly: Store your earrings in a clean and dry jewelry box or pouch. Avoid leaving them in humid areas.
  • Inspect for Damage: Periodically inspect your earrings for any signs of damage, wear and any visible stripping. If you notice any, consider having the posts repaired or replaced.
